Shems Friedlander will present several talks on Rumi and Sufism, among them two talks reading and discussing Rumi’s Fihi Ma Fihi sometimes referred to as Signs of the Unseen. Along with these sohbets (spiritual conversations) there will be periods of questions and answers.
The program will include performances of Hafiz Ismail Hakki, turkish musician from the Sufi tradition, he performs with the oriental lute, the ney flute and chants.
We also are glad to inform that this special course is honored to have a lecture by Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad.
Shems Friedlander is the author of ten books. He is a painter, photographer, graphic designer, filmmaker, and educator. His latest book Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi’s Forgotten Message has been published in English and Turkish.
Friedlander is Emeritus Professor at the American University in Cairo. He has been consistently selected as one of the 500 Most Influential Muslims in the World, in the field of Art and Culture, by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center.
Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad is an sunni Muslmi scholar, researcher, writer and academic. He is the Dean of the Cambridge Muslim College. Professor of Islamic Studies at both Cambridge Muslim College.
Ismail Hakki Cimen is specialized in the theory of the makams and its use in the hymns of the Sufi ceremonies (Ilahis). His unique performance of «duraks» and «kasides«, forms of poetic and musical expression of Ottoman literature, with secular and religious themes – moves audiences. Ismail was born in Turkey and lived in the United States and Brazil. For over 30 years, Ismail Cimen has performed as a guest in numerous concerts, lectures and workshops on Sufism and Sufi music.
