El proyecto nace en 1984 con una Conferencia de Ulemá en Granada. En 1993, la familia Romero dona el terreno a perpetuidad y se crea el waqf (fundación pía) que da origen a la Fundación Cultural Azzagra.The project began in 1984 with a Conference of Ulama in Granada. In 1993, the Romero family donated the land in perpetuity, creating the waqf (pious endowment) that gave rise to the Azzagra Cultural Foundation.

La Alquería se construyó entre 1996 y 2001 sobre el antiguo cortijo familiar. La Mezquita Al Baida y el programa de manuscritos arrancaron en 1998, y el conjunto fue inaugurado en 2001 por el Emir de Sharjah, el Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi.The Alquería was built between 1996 and 2001 on the old family farmstead. The Al Baida Mosque and the manuscript programme began in 1998, and the estate was inaugurated in 2001 by the Emir of Sharjah, Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi.

Abdussamad Romero

Abdussamad Antonio Romero Román nació en 1953 en Puebla de Don Fadrique, el mismo municipio donde hoy se levanta la Alquería. En 1980 abrazó el islam junto a su familia y adoptó el nombre de Abdussamad. Estudió lengua árabe y estudios islámicos en la Universidad Umm al-Qura de La Meca y es doctor en Sociología por la Universidad de Sarajevo.Abdussamad Antonio Romero Román was born in 1953 in Puebla de Don Fadrique, the very town where the Alquería stands today. In 1980 he embraced Islam together with his family and took the name Abdussamad. He studied Arabic language and Islamic studies at Umm al-Qura University in Mecca and holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Sarajevo.

Fundador y director de la Fundación Cultural Azzagra e impulsor de la Facultad de Estudios Andalusíes, es asesor del Consejo Supremo de la ISESCO —responsable de su comité cultural fuera del mundo árabe— y presidió The Islamic Manuscript Association (TIMA), con sede en la Universidad de Cambridge. Ada Romero Sánchez —Adiba—, hija de Abdussamad Romero, es especialista en historia de al-Ándalus y en paleografía y codicología de manuscritos árabes por la Universidad de Granada. En 2006 firmó el primer libro sobre el archivo de manuscritos andalusíes de la familia Kati en Tombuctú, y hoy divulga la historia de al-Ándalus y de los musulmanes de España.Ada Romero Sánchez —Adiba—, daughter of Abdussamad Romero, specialises in the history of al-Andalus and in the palaeography and codicology of Arabic manuscripts at the University of Granada. In 2006 she authored the first book on the Andalusi manuscript archive of the Kati family in Timbuktu, and today she shares the history of al-Andalus and of the Muslims of Spain.
